  There are a lot of words to describe local photographer Sylvia Pond, but chief among them is playful. That, and her obvious photography talents, is what drives a steady roster of clients booking her for photography gigs.
  
  “Waterloo Region is home to so many excellent photographers,” she says. “But people come to me because in addition to great photos, they also want a great experience.” Sylvia’s buoyant and warm personality translates into a comfortable and fun photography experience for her clients, both in her studio or on location.

  Sylvia learned photography from a friend who began by taking her on nature walks, to photograph leaves and trees. She was interested but not very inspired. When she turned her lens on people for the first time, she knew that’s where she could really shine.
  
  Building that one-on-one connection with someone is what makes her excited about the work, and it comes naturally to her. “Seeing people feel good about themselves, especially when we are often so self-critical, is a great feeling,” says Sylvia. “And that’s exactly why I do this.”

  Her approach is to make every session as comfortable as possible and talking with her subject beforehand helps. “I want to make the session lively and a good conversation helps me see how far I have to work to loosen them up,” she says, laughing. “The more natural the smile, the better the shots.” After taking hundreds of portraits she has discovered that it is usually two shots after a laugh that are the favourites from the shoot.

  Sylvia is also a foodie and if you follow her on Instagram, Twitter or visit her blog, you’ll see amazing food shots, mostly of meals she makes at home. “I love food and I take great pride in setting up my plate beautifully,” she says. “I love to cook and be playful, so why not take a photo and share my joy of food?’

  While a big chunk of her business is portrait work, she also does corporate work and event photography. This is her fifth year as an official Oktoberfest photographer, so when you see Sylvia all over town the next couple of weeks, say hi and give a smile for the camera.

- Peeking behind the curtain: Google Canada (thanks to Doors Open)

  We all know that the omnipotent tech giant, Google, creates some pretty special work spaces for its staff. With catered meals prepared by talented chefs, ridiculously comfy lounges, cool recreational play rooms and that infamous red slide, Google offices are the top-tier of collaborative and fun work environments.
  
  But they are often shrouded in mystery, with only the Google insiders getting access. So what does the newly designed Google Canada space at the Breithaupt Block in downtown Kitchener look like?

  You and I get to find out this Saturday.
  
  Doors Open Waterloo Region, an annual tour of architectural spaces and heritage sites, is this Saturday, September 17, and it is the key to getting to peek behind the Google curtain.
  
  Be welcomed into the local office, where you can check out the climbing wall, the library, the so-called ‘secret room’, or if you are so inclined, the space where Prime Minster Justin Trudeau hung out during Google’s official opening earlier this year. There is also a lecture at 11am, entitled The Impact of Design and Architecture on Culture.

  Jane Synder and Karl Kessler (previously profiled on this blog) are the local masterminds behind this event, coordinating it for the last dozen years. This year there are 48 sites we get to visit, 19 of which have a strong science and tech bent, aligning with the this year’s theme, Into Science and Tech.

  Thanks to Doors Open, you get to wander into the beautiful Seagrams distillery in Uptown Waterloo to check out Shopify; be toured through the ever-popular Perimeter Institute; and visit several businesses housed at 305 King St. in downtown Kitchener, including Dragon’s Den winner MappedIn, plus reebee, Sweet Tooth and Square.
  
  We also get to peek into beautiful churches, city halls, manufacturing facilities, historic inns, an architecture school, a local farm and and other interesting sites around the region, some which offer guided or self-guided tours so be sure to check the schedule.

- Finding rural beauty: Nancy Forde

  Nancy Forde has been enamoured with photography since age 10 when her father bought her an antique Brownie camera. Yet, it wasn’t until six years ago, the time her son was born, that she developed a serious commitment.
  
  “I am a trained actor and couldn’t imagine time for rehearsals and performances with a new baby on my hip,” says Nancy. “I craved a creative outlet that would be conducive to single motherhood and picking up the camera proved an easy and attractive medium that wasn’t reliant on coordinating schedules with others.” Her camera has become an extra limb: these days she’s never without it.

  She admits that she unconsciously frames images as she walks around. She laughs as she says, “It’s sometimes a challenge to lower the lens and just enjoy a scene on its own merit. I have to remind myself to do that. Actually, my son reminds me to do it, thankfully.”
  
  While Nancy has yet to feel she’s found her own definitive style, she is drawn to rural landscapes; the stormier and moodier the better. “I lived in a farmhouse for a decade and after relocating to Uptown Waterloo, I missed the expanse of sky, the farmer fields and the intimacy of the change of seasons,” she says. “I kept being drawn back to the country to capture what I was missing.”

  In the near future, she hopes to rise to the unique challenges of portrait photography but landscapes have been her primary focus so far. “The theatre major in me loves the drama of landscapes,” she says. “The solitude and spontaneity of what I might encounter driving out of the city, exploring backroads, is addictive. I prefer rain, fog, mist or snow over a picture-perfect, cloudless sky any day.” She attributes that melancholic nature to her Irish roots, and part of the reason she isn’t interested in capturing idyllic, pastoral scenes.
  
  “The years I spent rurally were emotional ones for me: my ex-spouse and I spent them battling infertility. So my constant yearning to return and document the pastoral life ends up bittersweet, often coloured by the sorrow of that time,” she says.

  But it seems she’s not the only one drawn to her moody, sometimes stark landscapes: she is receiving positive feedback about her first solo photography exhibit, Ruralgia, at Death Valley’s Little Brother (DVLB) in Waterloo.
  
  With nine large-format photos on display, Nancy feels lucky and extremely grateful to Joel and Katherine Gingrich, owners of DVLB, for the opportunity.

  “I was shocked when I one day received an email from Joel saying he had seen some of my photos online and wondered if I would be interested in a show at his cafe,” says Nancy. “His email kicked me off the artistic couch and I was challenged by this great opportunity to stretch and push myself artistically.”

  Nancy also has a serious following on Instagram, where she posts not only her beautiful photographs but also snippets of poetry or lines from classic books that reflect the mood of her work. “I miss the leisure time I once had for reading so this is one way I can revisit passages and characters I love, words that still haunt me or are evoked by a scene I am framing,” she says.

- Putting artistic gas in our creative tanks: Bright Blue Door

  Taking a first step beyond the Bright Blue Door at 142 Waterloo St., you enter a well-lit art gallery with studio space decked out with easels, workstations and the night I visited, almost a dozen people, making art and talking about art amongst gallery walls filled with art. This is the Bright Blue Door (BBD) creative tank – where artists rent small workspaces and get creative near each other, while BBD helps to share their work with the world.
  
  Aaron Lundrigan and Nancy Barbosa Alaimo are the creators behind this concept. Aaron is the “doormaster” who acts as the artist advocate, taking care of the business side of things, while Nancy, an artist, is the “keymaster,” who runs the creative side of their enterprise.
  
  BBD first opened its blue doors last November, rented their first artist spaces in January, celebrated their grand opening in April and just this month, launched their online store, to compliment their physical gallery. The online store features the work of artists who work in their space as well as those from the community who are looking for another way to share their work.

  Based on a social enterprise model, this for-profit business is structured to be a “community mover of the arts.” We are socialists at heart,” says Nancy. “We want to be able to help people be creative though the creative tank and offer affordable artist promotion through our marketing hub.”
  
  Aaron, who is a former corporate litigation lawyer, has always been a supporter of the arts, and through the BBD, develops marketing solutions to help artists take their work to the public. “Following an advocacy model, I look for opportunities for artists to get commissioned work, show at events or find places for them to teach, to increase their profile and move their career’s forward,” he says.
  
  All Waterloo Region artists, whether they are part of the BBD or not, can have up to five professional photos of their work taken monthly, to be hosted on the BBD online store or for their own use, all for free. They call this a #payitforward activity. Nancy, who is a painter and photographer, knows that you can be riddled with self-doubt about your work, and taking those first steps to sharing it publicly can be hard. And that’s part of the reason she wanted to start the BBD.

  “In my home studio, I painted two pieces a year,” says Nancy. “Once I moved into BBD, I created four paintings in four weeks – I feel tremendously inspired here, and I can’t stop working.” She wants to offer that creative space and inspirational work environment to help other artists.
  
  “We welcome people at all levels to share the space, experiment with their work, participate in shows, take feedback, learn from other artists and continue to enjoy and grow their work.” BBD has artists who are just exploring their craft; artists like Nancy who have several years experience but are still refining their style and technique; and flagship artists such as Ros Ramsay and Shelia Deimert who are experienced artists with a serious back catalogue of work.

  Their plan is to take the artists’ work out to the community, offering pop-up art galleries at local festivals and events, ensuring the region starts to develop a real sense for the creativity and talent within its borders. And this is just the beginning. Nancy and Aaron have a big vision to expand to other cities – Waterloo or Cambridge; train other advocates; and offer a similar creative launch pad for tattoo artists.
  
  Bright Blue Door creators see themselves as a radical model to support individual artists, ensuring that artists have the freedom to show their work anywhere and make money doing it.

- Opening minds and doors to architecture: Karl Kessler

  So how does a lover of architecture, history and photography like Karl Kessler make himself happy? One way is to be the coordinator of Doors Open Waterloo Region for the last 11 years.

  Karl and his wife Jane Snyder coordinate this day of architecture and heritage appreciation on behalf of the Region of Waterloo. And Saturday, September 20 is the next Doors Open event – check out the site listings and start planning your Saturday.
  
  This year, there are 41 architectural sites scattered across Waterloo Region, many of which offer access to places never open to the public. “People drive or walk by a building, occasionally wondering what happens inside, but often just take its presence for granted,” says Karl. “Doors Open is an amazing opportunity to think about buildings differently.” And of course for those who are innately curious like me, seeing inside a space you normally don’t have access to, can make any curious cat satisfied.
  
  After 11 years planning every element of this event, what has been a constant delight for Karl is how visitors appreciate the site hosts. “The hosts might be site owners, staff or volunteers who use the space, and the feedback we receive is that they are warm and gracious, and their love of the building, its details and history make it come alive for the visitors,” says Karl.

  Karl has of course seen all 41 sites but there are two that he is particularly excited about this time: the AirBoss factory in Waterloo and the Dunfield Theatre in Cambridge. One is a 100-year old tire factory with a million square feet of space now in operation as a rubber factory, and the other is a new theatre with a beautiful facade and airy lobby, offering sneak peeks into the backstage and costume areas. The two buildings are deeply contrasted in style, size and function and that is part of the appeal for Karl. But there are architectural delights for everyone’s taste, kiddos included (think Martins Family Fruit Farm or Region of Waterloo International Airport).
  
  Karl sees buildings as rather photogenic and capitalizing on local photographers who love to use this event as a way to get some amazing shots, Doors Open Waterloo Region has a Flickr group where people can upload their photos from the day. “This is an excellent way for us to get some wonderful images for event promotion, see the sites from different artistic perspectives and give photographers a venue for their work,” he says.

  And if you like storytelling and photography a bit more than architecture, Karl is also prepping for an upcoming photography exhibit at the City of Waterloo Museum: Overtime: Portraits of Perseverance at Work. He and Sunshine Chen interviewed and photographed dozens of people from vanishing professions and cultural traditions to capture the remaining practitioners of these fading practices. The exhibit runs from October 8, 2014 – January 30, 2015. You can also catch Karl this fall at the Waterloo Region Museum where he will be presenting on his vanishing trades project as part of a speaker series.

- Partners in creativity: Melissa Kristensen and Andre Smith

  Photographer Melissa Kristensen and wood worker/designer Andre Smith have been married for 27 years, and over time evolved their partnership into a creative business: Kristensen-Smith Photographic Art.
  
  Melissa captures evocative images and Andre sources unique reclaimed wood, and other alternative canvases, to print the photos on, creating large-scale pieces of collaborative art.
  
  “The idea of melding my photography with wood and furniture design came from a desire to give my work more texture and functionality,” says Melissa. “Andre, who loves the beauty of wood grains, came up with the idea of creating a canvass out of reclaimed wood.” They then had to figure out a way to print directly onto the wood so that the image would be crisp yet allow the grain to show through.
  
  They source the reclaimed wood themselves and each canvass is hand cut and assembled, making each piece unique. Printing the image on the canvas is a multi-step process, one they prefer to keep confidential, and can take different amounts of time, depending on the condition of the wood and the way they want it to look in the end.
  
  Both love to travel and enjoying sourcing interesting subject matter. “I’m inspired to capture an image when something I see creates an emotional response in me and I want to stop that feeling from escaping,” says Melissa. “By capturing it on film, I can relive that moment and share it with others.”
  
  Her subject matter is broad: nature, urban objects and unique perspectives of humans, with many photos from her life in Mexico and the Caribbean. “I hope that when people look at the photographs they will feel the texture or atmosphere created in the scene, or see themselves or someone they know within the image,” she says.
  
  While Melissa and Andre work from a home studio, they sell their work at art shows across the region and Ontario. They are regulars at the Button Factory’s Artist Alley and the Uptown Gallery in Waterloo Town Square and are often found at the One of Kind Show and Distillery District, both in Toronto.

  Every good photographer experiences a small thrill when what they see through their eye, gets captured perfectly by their camera. Photographer Mark Essner, who never leaves home without his camera, loves to capture things others may have missed. “Photography has an ability to convey so much in a frozen moment of time, that can never be repeated,” Mark says. “That’s the excitement of good photography.”
  
  Mark likes to shoot things that aren’t what they used to be: formerly grand places and objects that have lost their lustre; things that strike him as ironic; and people, both strangers and clients. He is the eye behind From My Eye to Yours blog and Twitter handle, where he shares his work.
  
  “I’ve always been the guy with the camera and over time, I’ve realized photography allows me to share stories and experiences,” he says. “The photograph is the ultimate way to show what I’m passionate about.”

  Mark’s work falls into two different areas these days: photography that is the basis for his art pieces and portrait photography. His creative process has evolved from traditional photography to mixed-media art. “I’ll print a photo twice: once on plexiglass and once on aluminum, or another medium,” says Mark. “I isolate an item in the photo and cut that shape out in the top layer, so one of the images has a different texture with a reflective quality, giving it a 3D effect.” It changes the way the viewer interacts with a photo and he gets positive reactions from this work.

  The other side of his work is portrait photography. He takes thoughtful and beautiful images of women, some of whom have never been photographed before. “Everyone I spend time with has a story, and I try to learn about her and that story, or at very least get to know her well enough to capture her – the real her,” he says.

  While selling a mixed media piece is more lucrative than his portrait work which he often does for free, he says shooting people is more personally rewarding as it allows him to connect with someone. “It is incredibly rewarding to show a person how she is seen by others,” Mark says.
  
  Mark is an avid music fan (check out his photos of the Headstones in the studio), is a board member of Neruda Arts and is involved with Arts Awards Waterloo Region. Mark would like to see Waterloo Region increase its support for the arts and culture sector. “I want this to be a vibrant and beautiful community to raise our families, and at the end of the day, an exciting and interesting place to unwind,” he says.

  It had been a while since I saw a movie at the Princess Cinema Original and I had forgotten its charms.
  
  The old-time, wooden ticket booth, the real butter for your popcorn, the hit-and-miss comfort levels of the seats, and the amazing range of engaging and thought-provoking movies.
  
  On my way out, I sneaked a peak into the quirky projection booth. It’s just as you’d hope to it: old popcorn bags for art, bottles of WD-40, peeling, sea foam green paint, all with a little sheen of grit.
  
  And since I know you were curious, I saw Jim Jarmusch’s Only Lovers Left Alive with the stunning Tilda Swinton. #vampires #TildaSwintonisamazing.

  Neil de Boer of St. Jacobs is rarely found without his camera, and is always on the lookout for an unusual object or a unique perspective to photograph. “I often go out looking for patterns, interesting lines or things that catch my eye,” he says. “I use software to track the sun, to tell me when the sunset will line up with an interesting location and I make sure I’m there, camera in hand.”
  
  Landscapes, architecture and artifacts are the things that capture his attention. “A landscape with an interesting foreground, buildings with bold lines or in disrepair or an object that tells a story of a forgotten time, combined with a rust or peeling paint, will get my attention every time,” says Neil.

  Neil is a passionate photographer who uses technology to his creative advantage. He is quick to point out he uses a mid-range DSLR and that a fancy camera is not required to make beautiful art. Capturing an object in the right light is critical but he uses software such as Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop to help him create what he saw in his mind’s eye when he took the photo.
  
  These tools help him change the tone of a photo, add textures and apply filters to intensify the image. “The combination of these software tools really feed the creative process for me,” he says. “But I always prefer to be there when the colours in a sunset peak, or when the sun has just set and a long exposure brings out a deep blue in the sky. It’s the balance between technology and nature that keeps me in awe of this beautiful world we live in.”

  Neil can spend up to several hours playing with an image, depending how far he wants to push his creativity. But he usually loses track of the time, eager to try new techniques, just enjoying the process.

  Most artists do what they do as a form of self expression. The same goes for Neil but he also hopes that his photographs will trigger a memory, shed light on a detail that strikes the viewer or create a sense of awe from the vibrant colours that surround us.

  I can’t think of a better way to spend an autumn weekend than strolling around a charming neighbourhood, kicking up leaves and getting to poke around in people’s houses and studios looking at art. (Okay, add some red wine into the mix and then it would be perfect.)
  
  The Central Art Walk through Kitchener’s Midtown neighbourhood is a great chance to meet your neighbours (or someone’s neighbours), look at pretty things, talk to talented people and pick up something lovely to make your life sweeter. Mark your calendar for this weekend, October 19-20.
  
  The tour offers up the works of 28 local artists including well-known local painters Jennifer Gough and nik harron as well fabric and glass artists, jewellery designers, wood carvers, photographers as well as mixed-media artists.

  Feel weird about walking into someone’s house or studio to look at their work? Don’t. The artists work hard to prepare for these shows and want to expose their work to as many people as possible. One of the event organizers and artists, Jakki Annerino says, “It gives us all an opportunity to sell our work and share our creativity with our friends, neighbours and visitors.”

  Jennifer Gough loves being a part of this event. “It gives me an opportunity to open the gallery to the public and creates a really nice personal experience,” she says. “I’ve found people love to visit artist’s studios and get a real sense of the creative process.”
  
  Even if you don’t buy anything, the artists are really happy to show you what they do, answer your questions and get people talking about their work and inspire people to be creative.

  So bundle up, grab a friend and head to midtown for a nice self-guided tour through a talented neighbourhood. We could all use a little punch of creativity in our lives.
